[Chapman Duncan was born in Bath, Grafton County, New Hampshire on July 1, 1812. When twenty years old he says that he had consumption and so decided to go to South America for his health. He wrote this account at Parowan City, Utah, June 22, 1852.]

My forefathers lived in comfortable circumstances and by honorable life and acts received an honorable degree of rank and influence.
