John McMurray
1798-1853
John McMurray was born March 9, 1798, at Guernsey, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was the second child and first son born to William and Ann McAdams McMurray. The family worked together farming.
On August 18, 1821, John married Mary Hutton in Warrington, York County, Pennsylvania. Mary’s parents, Simeon and Mary Underwood Hutton, also lived in Pennsylvania.
John was a tailor in Silver Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania during 1826 to 1829. Records show that John and Mary bought and sold lots in Columbiana, Ohio during 1832 to 1834. It was here that they were introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. John and Mary were apparently baptized prior to 1844 because their son, James, was baptized that year. Afterwards the family sold their possessions and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois to be closer to the headquarters of the church. Prior to this, they had lived at various times in both Pennsylvania and Ohio. John worked at farming and Mary ran a hotel, wayside inn or tavern as they called it then.
Their arrival in Nauvoo coincided with the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith. They left their son James in charge of their things while they went to see the bodies. John saw the blood-stained clothes and felt of the sorrow it brought to the Saints.
